Shade Cloth Percentage Explained: How Much Shade Do You Actually Need?
"How much shade do I need?" is the first thing most buyers ask us, and it's the right question — it just doesn't have one clean answer. Shade percentage tells you how much sun a cloth blocks: at 30% most of the light still gets through, at 90% you get deep, cool shade. How much you actually want depends entirely on what's sitting underneath it. A lettuce field and a private balcony are not asking for the same cloth, and picking the wrong shade level is one of the quicker ways to end up with stock that doesn't fit the job you bought it for.
So before you lock a number, work out which way your job leans. Here is how to read shade percentage, match it to the use, and where the figure stops being something you can pick off a chart.
What shade percentage actually means
Shade percentage is the share of sunlight the cloth blocks — no more complicated than that. Our shade cloth runs from about 30% to 90% shade: light, open mesh at one end, dense courtyard cloth at the other.
The number is softer than it looks, though. Two cloths both sold as "70%" won't always feel the same — knit pattern, tape width and colour each move the real shade rate. That's why we confirm the exact percentage against your spec instead of reading it off a table, and why a supplier who quotes you a precise shade figure sight unseen is rounding. Treat the percentage as the feel you're after, not a number good to the decimal.
More shade isn't "better" — match it to the job
The common mistake is to over-spec shade, on the idea that more must be safer. For anything growing, that backfires. Plants need light to grow; the cloth is there to take the heat and sun stress off them, not to shut the sun out. Push the shade too high over a crop and you starve it. Go too low over a carport and the cars still bake underneath. The right level is the one that suits what's below it — roughly, the common uses line up like this:

Colour changes the shade, not just the look
Colour isn't only cosmetic here. On the same construction, darker cloth — black, dark green — generally blocks more light and soaks up more heat, while lighter and reflective options like aluminet silver handle heat a different way again. So when you choose a colour you're also nudging the shade and how the cloth behaves in full sun. Decide the two together rather than treating colour as an afterthought.
