How Much Shade Cloth Do You Need for a Carport?

"How much shade cloth for a carport" is really two questions in one. Buyers asking it want to know how much fabric to order — square metres, roll width, roll length — and how much shade the fabric should actually block. Get either one wrong and the order arrives unusable: too narrow to span the frame, or too open to do the job.

This guide answers both, in the order a purchasing decision actually happens.

Start from the frame, not from the car

Measure the structure you are covering, not the vehicle underneath it. A carport frame is what the cloth attaches to, and the fabric has to reach the fixing points on every edge. Take the covered length and width of the frame, then add whatever your fixing method needs at the perimeter — eyelets, rope channels, batten wrap and tensioning all consume material beyond the bare span.

Match the span to an available roll width first

Shade cloth is produced on rolls, and the roll width decides whether you cover a span in one piece or have to join panels. Novaduro shade cloth is available in six standard widths: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 metres.

  • If your carport span fits inside one standard width, order a single-width run — no seams, fastest install, least waste.
  • If the span exceeds the widest roll, plan for panels joined on site, and add overlap allowance to your quantity.
  • Roll length is cut to your requirement, so length is usually the flexible dimension and width is the constraint to design around.

For distributors and installers buying in bulk, this is where quantity is genuinely won or lost. Choosing the width that matches your most common carport size reduces offcuts across an entire container, which matters far more to landed cost per covered square metre than the headline fabric spec.

Rolls travel well

Shade cloth ships as rolls, which load efficiently into a container. When you are consolidating an order, different widths and colours can be combined into one shipment. Quotes are available FOB, CIF or EXW, with Qingdao and Tianjin as the loading ports.

What shade percentage actually means

Shade rate (or shade percentage) is the proportion of sunlight the fabric blocks. A 90% cloth blocks about 90% of direct light and lets roughly 10% through. It is one of the two core specs buyers judge shade cloth on — the other is weight in g/m². Novaduro shade cloth ranges from about 30% to 90% shade.

Shade percentage is not the same as GSM

This is the single most common misunderstanding in carport enquiries. Heavier fabric generally does block more light — denser weave and higher weight trend toward higher shade — but weight alone does not give you a shade figure. Knit pattern, tape width and colour all affect the final shade percentage, which is why the exact shade % for any given fabric is confirmed per spec rather than read off a weight chart.

Colour affects appearance and perceived heat, but shade percentage is set by the fabric spec and confirmed per quote rather than assumed from colour.

Our shade cloth GSM guide covers how GSM and shade percentage relate in more depth.

Where a carport sits

The medium weight band, roughly 100–150 g/m², is a balanced range. Common uses in this band include carports, pergolas and commercial horticulture — the exact weight for a given installation depends on span, target shade level and mounting method, and is confirmed per quote. Lighter fabric, around 60–90 g/m², is more open and breathable and is used for agriculture, nurseries and greenhouses. The heavy band, roughly 160–200 g/m², reaches up to about 90% shade and is used for balconies, privacy screening and decorative courtyard work.

Directionally: applications where airflow and light transmission matter want lower shade; cooling and shade-loving nursery stock want the middle; privacy and courtyard covers sit at the higher end. Beyond that direction, the specific percentage is a decision to confirm against your fabric spec, not a number to assume.

Our standard dark-green and black courtyard cloth is made at 90% shade.

Treat any application-to-percentage mapping as general industry guidance, not a performance guarantee for your site.

What to send us to get a real number

Once you know the coverage area and roughly where you want to land on shade, a quote needs five things:

  • Target shade percentage or GSM band
  • Width
  • Length
  • Colour
  • Construction — flat-wire (decorative, two-tone, courtyard) or round-wire (technical netting)

With those five, we can come back with accurate pricing, minimum order quantity and lead time. MOQ depends on the spec, so it is quoted rather than published.

Material options

Novaduro supplies both a standard PE fabric for agricultural and lighter-duty use and an upgraded HDPE line that is UV-stabilized and aimed at decorative, courtyard and longer-service applications. Higher weight combined with UV stabilization is the mechanism behind longer service life; how long that runs in practice depends on climate and installation.

Products are made to order, and OEM, private label and custom specification work is available.

Who you are buying from

Novaduro is the overseas sales window of a China-based manufacturing partner, manufacturing in Binzhou, Shandong, China, selling factory-direct to global B2B buyers in English.

Frequently asked questions

How much shade cloth do I need for a carport?
Measure the covered length and width of the frame you are attaching to, not the vehicle underneath, then add extra for your fixing method — eyelets, rope channels or batten wrap all use material beyond the bare span. Match that span to a standard roll width where you can to avoid seams.
What roll widths does shade cloth come in?
Novaduro shade cloth is available in six standard widths — 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 metres — cut to the length you need. If a span exceeds the widest roll, panels are joined on site with an overlap allowance.
What shade percentage is right for a carport?
Carports commonly use fabric in the medium weight band, alongside pergolas and commercial horticulture. The exact percentage depends on span, target shade level and mounting method, and is confirmed per spec rather than assumed.
Is shade percentage the same as GSM?
No. GSM is the fabric weight; heavier fabric generally blocks more light, but knit pattern, tape width and colour also affect the final shade rate, so the exact shade % is confirmed per spec rather than read off a weight chart.
What information do you need to quote a carport cover?
Five things: target shade percentage or GSM band, width, length, colour and construction (flat-wire or round-wire). With those we confirm pricing, MOQ and lead time.
PE or HDPE for a carport?
Standard PE suits lighter-duty use; the upgraded HDPE line is UV-stabilized and aimed at decorative, courtyard and longer-service applications such as carports.
